English: Jack Brown Mrs. Kerr English 1 4/3/11 Winter Olympics Wiki The Winter Olympics is a worldwide competition of winter sports, such as cross-country skiing and biathlon, where hundreds of competitors compete for first place. The person who gets it is the best in the world of his or her sport. It has a history because the modern Olympics are old and because all people have a winter sport that appeals to them. First, the Modern Olympics are old. For example, the first modern Olympics were held in Athens, Greece in 1896 (S). It would have been held in Budapest, Hungary if private Greek Companies hadn’t donated generously large amounts of money for Greece to build arenas and docks and such for the games (Gettings). Also, there were 220 males in 43 events at the games. Most of the athletes were of Greek origin(S). Additionally, the reward system was different back in 1896. Instead of Gold, Silver and Bronze Medals there were these: Victor’s Medal—silver=1st place, bronze=2nd place, Certificate of Olympics—given to winners, and finally the 1896 Commemorative Medal—was given to all athletes included in Olympic Games (None). Second, a lot of people enjoy watching or participating in the Biathlon. So, the U.S.A. Olympic Team, and any other team/athlete, practices anywhere where there is cross-country terrain and snow. Roads, trails, fields, anywhere (Anonymous). In addition, some biathletes train at Lake Tahoe’s ski resort (Not Available). Lastly, the Winter Olympics are fun for all, whether it be competitors or spectators. It is fun for all because it is old, and because everyone likes a winter sport.
